Before install day
Permits for battery storage involve more paperwork than EV charger permits. Tesla also requires a system design submitted for approval before install. We handle both. The lead time from quote-approval to install is typically 2 to 4 weeks, longer in jurisdictions that backlog permit review.
In California, the SGIP rebate application also goes in during this window. SGIP intake requires a few customer-side details (utility account number, medical baseline status if applicable) that we collect up front.
The day before install, we confirm the truck, the lead electrician, and the arrival window.
The arrival and site walk
A two-person crew is standard for single-Powerwall installs. Larger systems (2 or 3 Powerwalls) get a third electrician for the lifting and the longer commissioning sequence.
Site walk confirms the Powerwall mount location, the gateway location, the existing panel layout, and any solar inverter (if you have existing solar). On installs that pair with new solar, we coordinate with the solar crew to sequence the work.
Gateway swap (1 to 2 hours, power off)
The Tesla Gateway is the brain of the Powerwall system. It sits between your utility connection and your panel, manages islanding when the grid goes down, and runs the time-of-use logic.
Installing the gateway requires power off at the main. The crew pulls the meter, terminates the new feed-through into the gateway, runs the connection back to the panel, and re-energizes. Most homes are without power for 1 to 2 hours during this step.
Powerwall mount and AC wiring (2 to 3 hours)
The Powerwall itself goes on a wall or floor mount, typically in the garage or on an exterior wall. The hardware is heavy (more than 250 pounds), so the crew uses a two-person lift for the mount.
AC wiring runs from the Powerwall back to the gateway. Conduit is sized for the Powerwall amperage and code-compliant for the wire fill.
Solar coupling (varies)
If you have existing solar, the inverter AC-couples to the Powerwall through the gateway. If you are doing solar plus storage on the same install, Powerwall 3 has a built-in solar inverter so the solar DC strings terminate directly at the Powerwall.
Commissioning (1 to 2 hours)
After everything is wired and energized, the crew runs the commissioning sequence through the Tesla installer app. This pairs the Powerwall with the gateway, configures the backup-circuit logic, runs a test trip of the islanding, and confirms the system passes self-checks.
Then we walk you through the homeowner Tesla app: how to see state of charge, how to set backup-only or time-of-use mode, and how the system behaves during a grid outage.
After install day
Inspection lands within 1 to 5 business days. The inspector verifies the wiring, the conduit, the labels, and the disconnects. After sign-off, the permit closes and the SGIP paperwork (in California) goes in for final processing.
The 30% federal Investment Tax Credit applies to your federal income tax return for the year of install. We provide the documentation you need for the credit at handoff.
Wrapping up
Powerwall install is a real one-day project that hits a clear sequence: permits, gateway, mount, wiring, commissioning, inspection. See our Tesla Powerwall installation services for the full scope, or request a free Powerwall quote for your home.
