Breakers that trip again and again
A breaker trips to protect you, so the rare trip is fine. A breaker that trips on the same circuit every few days is telling you something. The circuit is overloaded, or there is a fault in the wiring.
Resetting it over and over just silences the alarm. The cause is still there. Get the circuit looked at.
Outlets that feel warm or look scorched
An outlet should stay cool. Warm, buzzing, or discolored outlets point to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. Both build heat behind the wall.
Stop using that outlet and have it checked. This is one of the more common starts of an electrical fire.
Lights that flicker or dim
One flickering fixture usually means a loose bulb or a worn switch. Lights across the whole house that dim when the AC or dryer starts point to something larger, like a loose service connection or a panel running short on capacity.
A burning smell with no source
A burning-plastic or fishy smell near an outlet or the panel means something is overheating right now. Turn off that circuit at the breaker and call an electrician the same day.
Two-prong outlets and missing GFCIs
Ungrounded two-prong outlets and a lack of GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoors leave you exposed to shock. Modern code requires that protection for a reason.
Old wiring and old panels
Aluminum branch wiring, knob-and-tube, and a few panel brands with known failure histories deserve a professional look. Age alone is not a verdict, but these warrant an inspection before they cause trouble.
What to do right now
If a circuit smells hot, feels warm, or sparks, shut it off at the breaker and keep it off. Do not keep resetting a breaker that will not hold. Then call a licensed electrician.
